Enjoy Ice Fishing & Horseback Riding at the Danada Forest Preserve

woods

Just seven minutes from Preserve at Cantera is a 797-acre destination featuring prairies, woodlands, and wetlands.

We’re talking about the Danada Forest Preserve, and it has quite a story to tell.

History

When Daniel and Ada Rice purchased the property in the late 1920’s, it was a working farm featuring corn and rice fields as well as an apple orchard.

Fifteen years later, Daniel purchased several thoroughbreds for his wife’s interest in racing. That’s how the Ada L. Rice Stable was born, and its design allowed the horses to be exercised even in inclement weather. For more than thirty years, the farm produced champions such as Kentucky Derby winner, Lucky Debonair. He crossed the line first in a neck-to-neck finish, earning $112,000.

Danada Equestrian Center

The Danada Equestrian Center offers lessons, group tours, and educational experiences throughout the year. Adults of all riding abilities can enjoy classes such as Horsemanship I & II, and Horsemanship III Trail which allows students to maneuver over and around obstacles.

Danada-Herrick Regional Trail

The multi-use Danada-Herrick Regional Trail meanders through marsh, prairie, and woodland habitats. It’s nationally recognized and offers picturesque scenery along the way.

Ice Fishing

The Forest Preserve District allows for ice fishing when at least four inches of ice is present. Anglers will want to walk the trail to Rice Lake, which is stocked with crappie, largemouth bass, and channel catfish.

The preserve is open daily from one hour after sunrise to one hour after sunset. As visitors explore, they may also see leopard frogs, painted turtles, and a rookery of nesting herons.
