It’s one of the largest natural history museums in the world, and since opening in 1894, its impressive collection has grown to nearly forty million objects from around the world.
The museum allows visitors to explore everything from ancient cultures to the latest scientific discoveries, and exhibits include:
Step into the Mummies exhibit to uncover the lives of the people inside. The mummies are from ancient Peru and Egypt, and the display comes complete with intricately decorated coffins, ceramic items, and mummified animals.
Griffin Halls of Evolving Planet
Evolving Planet covers 4.6 billion years of evolutionary exploration over 27,000 square feet. You’ll get to know the creatures that have roamed Earth throughout time, including T. rex, a giant ground sloth, and a Tully monster discovered right here in Illinois.
Cyrus Tang Hall of China
Get an up-close look at the objects that tell the stories of China’s complex history and diverse cultures. The curators assembled this display to explore the intricacies of this vast country, and the items cover more than 10,000 years from the Neolithic Period to the present. Highlights include the Qingming Scroll, spirit stones, and recovered cargo from a trading ship that sank in the Java Sea in the 12th or 13th century.
Antarctica: On the Edge 3D
Known as one of Earth’s most stunning locations, Antarctica is changing faster than anywhere on the planet. This incredible film takes an in-depth look at this remote place, and viewers explore the continent’s 900-mile peninsula by land, sea, and air.
